When winter comes to an end, it's time to get your boat out of storage and prepare it for spring. As long as you completed the winterization process before storing the craft, the process is relatively quick and easy. In a single weekend, you can complete all of the tasks and inspections that are necessary for a safe and fun boating season. As you de-winterize your boat, keep in mind that every model is different. Check and Replace Batteries

When you're storing a boat for the winter, it's common practice to remove the battery. Before you put it back in the boat, check the connections for signs of wear. Charge the battery, and put it in place.

De-Winterize the Engine and Cooling System

The engine and the battery are a great place to start preparing your boat for spring. The process is different for every model; check your boat manual for instructions. It's also a good idea to check for leaks and rust, examine hose connections, inspect bearings and check fluid levels. Spring is often a good time to change your oil. Do the same on your cooling system, and replace any existing coolant with a fresh batch.

Inspect the Fuel Tank and Fuel Lines

Winter can wreak havoc on your fuel system, so it's important to check the tank and the fuel lines. Look for cracks, leaks, rust and other signs of wear. If everything is in good shape, fill the tank with fresh fuel.

Clean Canvas Surfaces

If your boat has canvas, take time to inspect each one carefully before going out on the water. During winter storage, mice have a tendency to chew through canvas to get to the cozy interior. Check for holes, tears and fraying on the cushions, spray hood, covers and enclosures, and make repairs as necessary. While you're at it, shake off the dust and clean off any stains. If your canvas is in need of waterproofing, now is a good time to take care of it.

Restore Electronics, Cushions, and Safety Items

Gather all of the items you removed from the boat in the fall and return them to their proper places. This might include electronics, navigation systems, cushions and ropes. Walk through and check that everything is in its place, particularly when it comes to safety gear such as flares, personal flotation devices, first aid supplies and fire extinguishers.

Clean and Resupply

Before your first spring voyage, spend an afternoon cleaning and restocking your boat. Make sure your appliances are clean and the propane tanks are full. Clean the dust that accumulated in storage, and wipe down all of the surfaces. Stock the cabin with everything you need for spring and summer, including dry goods, paper items, cleaning products and emergency supplies.

After storing your boat for the winter, it takes a few days to get it ready for the water. With careful inspection and restocking, you can enjoy a safe summer season.
